Take only memories… leave nothing but footprints
It’s the end of the year and time to enjoy a well-deserved break. Here’s how to take a sustainable approach to kicking back with your feet up!
Transform your home into a Shangri La. If you really want to reduce your carbon footprint, consider staying at home for the holidays. Set your house up like a B&B with beautiful fresh towels, yummy homemade treats and a selection of your favourite magazines (don’t forget to recycle them afterwards). Turn the phone off, forget about the housework and allow yourself to enjoy some rest and restoration. ![]() Take public transport. Check with your local council to see where buses and trains run to and then pick a destination. It could be a beach you’ve never been to, botanical gardens or the zoo! Walk. New Zealand has an abundance of stunning coastal and bush walks – the perfect way to burn off extra calories if you’ve overindulged during the festive season. Whether you’re a keen hiker or happy to take a gentle amble, this is a great way to unwind naturally! Reduce, reuse, recycle. Instead of constantly buying and binning bottled water, use one bottle and top it up from the tap. Keep a reusable shopping bag in your car and say goodbye to plastic bags forever. And give ridiculous packaging the elbow. Choose products that are locally grown and locally made. Slow down. It’s easy to over commit during the holiday season by trying to do much. Identify areas of stress in your life and do your best to alleviate them. The end of the year’s a great time for reflection and to consider making positive changes in your life. Spend it with family. One of the best things about holidays is being able to spend time with your family. Remember the greatest gifts you can give are love and time!
