It’s World Red Cross Day on May 8 – the perfect time to make sure your first aid and emergency kits are well stocked.
Since its inception in the mid 1800s, the Red Cross has been dedicated to preventing and alleviating human suffering in the heart of war torn nations and disaster zones around the world.
While the hand of the Red Cross often stretches beyond hospital aid, the red cross emblem has become synonymous with medical and emergency treatment.
Celebrate World Red Cross Day by making sure your first aid and emergency kits are stocked with the essentials.
It is a good idea to have a first aid kit at home and in the car. And in the event of a civil emergency you should have an emergency kit capable of sustaining you and your family for three days.
If you don’t have a first aid kit, you can create one using a small tackle box or something as simple as a resealable freezer bag. Make sure you keep it somewhere easily accessible.
Your first aid kit should contain the following:

-
Paracetamol/ibuprofen
-
Tweezers
-
Alcohol wipes
-
Medical adhesive tape
-
Sterile gauze
-
Elastic bandages
-
Several sizes of adhesive bandages
-
Insect bite swabs
-
Bandage scissors
-
Bandaids
-
Exam gloves
-
An effective antiseptic – we recommend Pure Tea Tree Oil, Nature’s best antiseptic and antifungal treatment! The First Aid Kit in a bottle

For an emergency kit, include the following:

-
Torch with spare batteries
-
Radio with spare batteries
-
Wind and waterproof clothing
-
Blankets or sleeping bags
-
Pet supplies
-
Toilet paper and large rubbish bags
-
Face and dust masks
-
Food and water for three days

To learn more about first aid, the book

for Every Emergency offers plenty of helpful information – or you could enrol in a course. The Red Cross and St Johns both offer great first aid courses!
